Last month I got a voicemail from an Erica who was interested in having the birth of her third daughter photographed.
“I didn’t really know this is a thing, but I think I wanna do it!” She said in the voicemail.
I laughed and called her back immediately.
We had a quick consult over the phone instead of in person, because Andy and I happened to be in DC for Wedding Wire World. Erica told me that she had been induced with her previous two labors and that she was excited to see how it would turn out this time. She wanted to let her body do it’s thing. The minute that we were on our way home Erica and Nick signed the contract and I was all set to be their birth photographer!
We set up a play date with our daughter so I could get to know them and so that they could get comfortable with me since we had only met over the phone. Lucy ran up the stairs to play with Avery and Brynn, the soon to be big sisters, and left us to chat. I had such a time hanging out and getting to know them. She told me about Brynn and Avery’s birth and I told her about Lucy’s. She told me that she has no pictures of her first births and the girls when they were newborns. She wished she could go back and show Brynn and Avery what it was like, but much like me, she just hadn’t thought about it in time. I left the play date SO happy that I got to meet them and help them capture this crazy whirlwind that was about to happen!
Erica emailed me on 8th (her due date was the 18th) and told me that she was 1cm dilated at her check up. This could mean she was getting close, OR it could mean absolutely nothing. She got through another day with Avery and Brynn guessing names, and then emailed me again on Thursday morning. I happened to be all packed up on the way to lunch and a meeting with Andy, and she said she was headed to the hospital. It was about 11am and the sun was shining and the weather was perfect. What an amazing time to have a baby!
About an hour after she got admitted, she got an epidural and was finally able to relax a little. Just then we heard two little voices coming down the hall. Avery and Brynn had been pulled out of school right before lunch to come meet the baby. They were bouncing up and down and trying very hard not to jump right in that bed with mom for a snuggle.
When it was time to push Erica’s wonderful mom took Avery and Brynn over to the waiting area. Nick plugged in Erica’s Pandora station and put the picture of her dad next to the bed. It was all coming together! Just as she was beginning to push, one of Erica and Nick’s favorite songs came on the radio and her dad watched over them.
It. was. perfect.
Little Tessa Winter entered the world at 1:58pm on Thursday March 10th, at 6lbs 12oz and 19 1/2 “ long.
Avery and Brynn could hear baby Tessa’s cries from the waiting area and couldn’t handle themselves. They were so excited and couldn’t wait to meet her. After mom and baby were cleaned up we had the girls walk in the room with their eyes covered and then we counted to three, and BAM! The cutest reactions you’ve ever seen. They couldn’t hold back their emotions which made everyone else in the room lose it too. There was giggling and crying and laughing.
There was nothing more perfect in this moment then this amazing family.
Nick was an amazing support to Erica and She labored like it was nothing at all. I am amazed by her strength and empowered by their love!
Erica and Nick, thank you for allowing me to be a part of this awesome time in your life. I hope you are adjusting well to 3 beautiful girls, enjoy every minute of it!
