Shannon and Joe are some of the sweetest and fun people we know. Our wonderful assistant Jamie introduced us and we couldn’t be more thankful. We did their maternity photos back in December and Shannon looked amazing in the dark blue dress with the sun shining through the trees. Joe is a goofball and made Shannon laugh the entire time, and we had a blast getting to know their first baby, Ellie!
I stalked them on Facebook daily as they got closer and closer to their due date. I couldn’t wait to get newborn photos of what was sure to be the cutest little baby! JJ is Shannon and Joe’s miracle rainbow baby, so I really wanted to be able to capture this brand new special time for them.
As soon as JJ was born, we set up a shoot for the following week. Poor Andy couldn’t come because he had a cold, and didn’t want to get the little one sick. Although, if he was there, I’d probably have to fight to hold JJ because Andy is obsessed with him.
We started the shoot out by doing some poses on the beanbag and set it all up in the living room. I always love in home sessions because the baby is so relaxed and feels comfortable in whatever poses you put them in. JJ was especially good so we got quite a few different poses with him, even wide awake! Ellie was jealous that we were giving JJ all of our attention so she had to get some licks in. Joe picked up JJ to burp him after a quick snack, and JJ just looked up at his dad with the best wide eyes and big smiles. I caught a few pictures of Shannon looking at her boys in awe and they are some of my favorites.
When we were finished downstairs, we went upstairs to change JJ and take some lifestyle photos. We wanted to re-do some of the photos we had done at the maternity session so we could have some before and afters! I LOVE JJ’s nursery, Shannon did an amazing job decorating. I especially love the book display on the wall. Shannon knows how important it is to surround your baby with books and she also has the best voices when she reads ;).
Here are my favorite photos from their session, and a few quotes from JJ’s mom and dad!
How did you feel when you found out you were pregnant with your rainbow baby?
“I was SO excited when we found out we were pregnant after our miscarriage. It was a miracle to us, too, because we had been trying for 2 years and had been through many failed infertility treatments and this pregnancy happened while we were taking a break from treatments. (and no it was not just because I “relaxed”- there were 4 changes/discoveries that were made! I hate when people assume that haha) Right after we found out we were pregnant I started bleeding and both of us thought it was another miscarriage and sort of mourned the loss. I actually talked to the baby one day after I talked to my doctor about the blood work and she said it was too early to tell if it was a miscarriage and we would just have to get more blood work and wait. After I got off the phone I said to the baby, “I have fought so hard for you- if you can, just keep fighting because I cannot wait to meet you” and fight he did – within a week the numbers took off, the bleeding stopped and the pregnancy was smooth sailing after that. I have not and will never take him for granted because of everything we have been through. I have definitely appreciated him much more than if I hadn’t struggled.”
How did you guys choose JJ’s name?
“We actually chose his name while we were dating and not even engaged. I don’t know how the conversation came up but Joseph said if he ever had a boy he did not want to name him after him because it was always so confusing growing up with his Dad and Grandfather also named, Joseph. They also didn’t have the lineage of junior or the third because they all had different middle names, so it wasn’t like he would be breaking that at all. Originally Joseph threw out the idea of his middle name, Anthony, but I said I had always liked the name James. It’s my father’s middle name and I have always just loved it. Joe said that was his grandfather’s name, who he loved dearly, and so we decided to use Joseph as the middle name and settled on James Joseph. Joseph is also my father’s late father who I never had the chance to meet and my brother’s middle name. Both James and Joseph have a strong family connection for each of us.”
How is Ellie reacting to her new little brother?
“She is amazing with him. Doesn’t bark when he cries at all. In fact, she actually takes her froggy (her little stuffed frog from when she was a puppy) to him wherever he is crying and then lays down by him. She also goes up to him when he’s laying on the floor and gives him kisses on his cheek. It is amazing how she been with him.”
What is your favorite part about having a little boy?
Joe: “Just thinking about introducing him to all of the things I enjoy makes me very excited. Playing sports, doing projects around the house. I just can’t wait to see him throw a ball or follow me around the yard with a plastic lawnmower.”
Shannon: “My favorite part is definitely the snuggles. When I found out I was having a boy I was nervous because I immediately thought it would be all rough and tumble craziness in my future. But a lot of my friends told me oh just you wait, “boys love their mama’s” and he does love to cuddle and snuggle with me. Bedtime is my favorite part of the day when he snuggles with me while he falls asleep on my shoulder. I also cannot wait to see Joe teach him to play catch and swing a golf club- it’s something I look forward to the most!”
Thank you so much Shannon and Joe for having me over, and letting me capture newborn photos of your new little family! I can’t wait to get more pictures of JJ growing up with his doggy in the future!
